What to pack in your hospital bag checklist

It’s never too early to start packing your hospital bag and preparing yourself for baby’s arrival. It can even help reduce the nerves around feeling ‘ready’ for baby, if you plan and pack your hospital bag ahead of time.

There’s plenty of advice available on what items may come in handy for the hospital and the journey home with your precious new bundle, which can be somewhat overwhelming. We’ve made your job easier by compiling a handy checklist for what to pack for baby, what your partner may need, and of course, what to bring for yourself.

@missandreaheinrich, shared her helpful tips and tricks for her hospital bag when she gave birth to her son, Ollie.

“Firstly, be prepared and pack your bag early. I hadn’t finished packing my bag when my waters broke, so I missed packing some essential items! The things I appreciated having with me, were comfortable clothes, my own toiletries and a phone charger with a long cord. Luckily, I’d already packed an outfit for Ollie, plus a couple of muslin wraps.”

Andrea added that she doesn’t think she would have used a robe or slippers, even if she’d had time to pack them!

What to pack in your hospital bag for YOU:

From simple comforts to downright essentials - here are your hospital bag must-haves. Click on each point for more information.

Medicare card, health insurance card & hospital paperwork

Have these important documents in an easy to reach and remember location, so you aren't scrambling on arrival to the hospital.

Your own pillows, blankets and other comfort items

Anything that will make the hospital feel more homely and personal are a plus!

Slippers, or comfortable slip on and off shoes

This will save you bending down to do up your laces, and ensure quick and easy dressing when needed.

A robe or light jacket

Perfect to wear when having visitors, or if you need to move around the hospital. A silk/satin robe may also give you a much needed self care moment.

Button down pyjamas

Button down sleepwear is essential here for easy access if you're breastfeeding.

Nursing bras, breast pads, nipple cream

Important to have whether you're breastfeeding or not!

Maternity pads

Your hospital may provide these, but it can be helpful to bring your own just in case, and this will allow you to choose your preferred brand and type.

Comfortable clothes and underwear

The looser, and more comfortable the better!

A non-scented lip balm

Opt for a non-scented lip balm, or a product you used during your pregnancy so the smell is familiar to your baby. Your lips will dry out quickly in the hospital aircon.

Toiletries

Make sure to bring the same items that you have used throughout your pregnancy so your baby is familiar with the smell. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, facial cleanser, moisturiser, toothbrush, toothpaste, medications, hair ties , brush, cosmetics, deodorant and any other items you like to use to freshen up.

Music

Many women like to bring their own speaker and playlist to help them stay calm, or to energise you when needed.

Eye mask and ear plugs

You'll need all the rest you can get! Make it as easy for yourself as possible to drift off.

Phone charger and phone

There may be a lot of down time, and you'll need your phone charged for when you're ready to announce the birth to your family and friends.

What to pack for your partner:

Snacks and drinks

They'll need to refuel in order to give you the support you need, make sure they're snacks you enjoy too for sharing.

Camera, phone and chargers

Make sure they're prepared to capture those precious first moments between you and your baby.

The announcement list

A list of the names and phone numbers of all the people you wish to share the birth announcement with.

A physical credit card and cash

You'll be glad to have this on hand for things like parking meters and vending machines.

Swimwear

You'll need this for a water birth, or if you plan on spending time in the shower during labor.

Toiletries

Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, facial cleanser, moisturiser, toothbrush, toothpaste, medications, brush, deodorant.

Pillow and blanket

Especially if your hospital doesn't provide extras.

A comfy change of clothes

Sweatpants, socks, undies, t-shirt and a sweatshirt.

What to pack in your hospital bag for your baby:

Bodysuits or Wondersuits

The two way zip kind are very convenient, especially as you get used to the process.

Singlets, socks, mittens and beanies

Newborn's fingernails can be surprisingly sharp!

Nappies and wet wipes

Again, your hospital may provide these but it's good to have additional on hand.

Blankets and Muslin wraps

Your hospital will provide blankets, but it's handy to have your own, especially for your trip home.

An outfit for leaving the hospital

You may want something that's a little warmer than the standard onesies, depending on the weather.

Car capsule or travel system

We recommend the Britax B-Pod, which you can find on the Redsbaby website.

For pet owners - a spare soft toy or blanket

Keep this with your newborn for the first day, then send this home to your pet to introduce them to your baby's sent.

Gifts for any older siblings

Some parents find this helps to introduce the older siblings to the new baby, and reduces any anxiety or jealousy around the new baby.
